Kitchen Assistant


Hours: 11:00am – 7:00pm Tuesday – Saturday
Immediate Supervisor: Senior Director of Operations
Program: Emergency Shelter for Homeless Men and Women
Founded in 1983, Austin Street Center provides emergency shelter and meets the basic need of the most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in Dallas.

Position Purpose
The Kitchen Assistant will work in conjunction with kitchen staff at Austin Street Center. This position involves a wide variety of duties regarding the orderliness, safety, and cleanliness of the kitchen. This position must be available to assist volunteers, clients, and staff and ensuring that the clients have three meals a day.

Primary Responsibilities
• Works in conjunction with kitchen staff to ensure provision of breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack (when available) to clients
• Assist the meal donor volunteers with setting up for and serving meals
• Work with kitchen staff to oversee and train Austin Street guests who volunteer in the kitchen
• Ensure that the kitchen is clean and sanitized before, during and after every meal
• Assist in coordination of food donors for food deliveries and meal planning
• Make sure that all food is properly stored and rotated
• Assist to plan and prepare meals when no volunteers are scheduled
• Responsible for picking up orders from North Texas Food Bank, Sam’s Club and food donations (as needed)
• Producing a weekly schedule for kitchen volunteers, as well as working with kitchen staff recruiting new volunteers
• Complete monthly reports, logs and data electronically
• Address client concerns to any food issues
• Assist other departments as needed

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required
• Registered Food Service Manager Certificate or ability to get certified
• 1-year experience in kitchen service
• Have and maintain valid Texas Driver’s License
• Ability to lift 25 – 40 pounds. Tasks may involve bending, lifting and carrying heavy items
• Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office and specialized computer programs
• Exceptional Customer Service Skills
• Ability to solve problems efficiently and professionally
• Excellent Communication Skills
• Ability to be flexible and work under time constraints
• Ability and desire to work with the homeless population
• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
• Capable of working independently
• Must be able to work weekends, evenings and some holidays
• Acceptance of agency philosophies and guidelines

Additional Experience a Plus
• CPR – AED – First Aid
• Prior experience with homeless population
