Director of Shelter Services


Program: Emergency Shelter for Homeless Men and Women

Position Purpose:
The Director of Shelter Services will oversee all service partners (agency relations) and shelter services provided at Austin Street Center, including intake and data management, triage, resource information, clothing distribution, and Welcome Center.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:
• Oversee day-to-day management of shelter services, making revisions as needed to policies and procedures (Grievance process, baggage room, stay in pass, etc.).
• Monitor, manage, analyze and evaluate data, data collection processes, and expected outcomes.
• Lead departmental staff meetings, holding employees under her/his leadership accountable.
• Work with Chief Executive Officer and Leadership Team to execute the strategic plan.
• Act as agency representative by providing leadership in collaborative partnerships/grants.
• Act as a liaison between program, maintenance, administration, security, and advancement personnel as well as shelter service providers.
• Schedule and coordinate all service providers—MOUs, supply needs, classes, services.
• Implement all policies and procedures to operate programs related to shelter services.
• Ensure all programs meet the expected outcomes and measure client and service provider satisfaction.
• Work with Director of Client Services to enhance and adjust the programs and services as needed to best serve the clients; work with Director of Security to ensure cohesiveness with Shelter Services and Security staff.
• Build and leverage community partnerships to increase the level and quality of care to all clients.
• Act as liaison between shelter service providers, program staff and administrative leadership.
• Attend meetings, workshops, seminars, or community events centered around homelessness.
• Review and approve expenditures along with purchasing supplies as needed.
• Identify and implement efficiencies in client volunteer program and distribution of resources.
• Lead departmental staff meetings, holding employees under her/his leadership accountable.
• Manage special projects related to shelter and program services as needed.

Fundamental Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:
• Bachelor’s degree required, but Master’s degree preferred in Nonprofit Management or a related field from an accredited college or university
• Knowledgeable in operations and management principles, procedures, and practices
• Must be highly organized and detail-oriented
• Ability to connect and work well with stakeholders internally and externally
• Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work in a fast paced environment
• Knowledge of crisis intervention principles and practices, preferably in the area of homelessness
• Demonstrates adaptability to performing a variety of duties, occasionally changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure
• Demonstrates competent computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office
• Ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and written, as well as comprehend and follow oral and/or written directions
• Demonstrates experience with and sensitivity to varying cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds, values, and attitudes
• Support agency philosophies regarding homelessness, internal conflict resolutions, and how decisions are made
• Ability to act in a leadership role function as a team player
• Possess and demonstrate excellent integrity
• Developed relational and listening skills
• Demonstrated ability to build effective teams
• Ability to conduct detailed evaluations and studies and prepare related reports and recommendations
