The front desk is fast paced and high energy, perfect for anyone great at multitasking. Volunteers provide direct client assistance, interact with the public, help direct other volunteers, and communicate with shelter staff closely. Assistance is needed every day, with the busiest times occurring between 2:00pm and 6:00 pm each afternoon.
Volunteers in the clothing room interact one-on-one with Austin Street guests by providing a much-needed service. By helping distribute donated clothing, shoes, personal items, and bedding, volunteers help establish a sense of trust and belonging. Assistance is needed each day, with the busiest times occurring between 2:00pm and 6:00pm on weekdays.
Each day, all Austin Street guests are welcomed and greeted by intake workers. Working alongside shelter staff, volunteers check guests in and assign beds for the evening, and over time learn individual names and faces of those we serve regularly. Assistance is needed each day from 1:45pm to 6:00pm, and is busiest from 4:00pm-5:30pm.
Donations are constantly being delivered to Austin Street, and there is a regular need for help sorting usable items for our clothing room based on gender, season, and clothing type. This is a great opportunity for a few people to volunteer together. Assistance is needed 10:00am to 2:00pm each day, and is busiest on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays.
Volunteers in the computer lab offer direct one-on-one assistance for clients searching for jobs, writing resumes, and preparing for interviews. Must have a basic knowledge of computer functions, and willingness to teach computer skills. Assistance is needed each day, with highest demand from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on weekdays and from noon to 6:00pm on Sundays.
